Physical Education

Physical Education is a valued and integral part of the curriculum at Ashperton Primary Academy. We are committed to ensuring that all our pupils participate fully and foster a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity. The resulting physical literacy is fundamental to pupils’ overall development, underpinning their ability to live healthy, active lives.

Our extensive field and MUGA provide a rich environment for breaktimes and outdoor learning, enabling pupils to develop their physical skills, spatial awareness and teamwork. With this space, we can deliver a wide range of sports and activities effectively, whilst promoting exploration, resilience and a connection with the outdoors. All of which supports pupils’ physical, social and mental wellbeing.

Our PE curriculum is structured and supported using Get Set 4 PE. This high- quality scheme provides a progressive and inclusive framework, ensuring there is clear skill development across all year groups. The scheme supports teachers with well-sequenced lessons, clear objectives and provides assessment opportunities. Pupils can build on prior knowledge, whilst building their confidence and competence in a plethora of physical activities. Get Set 4 PE promotes inclusivity, allowing learners to access and succeed in their PE lessons.

All pupils are encouraged to take part in a range of extra-curricular opportunities such as netball, tag rugby, football, athletics, tennis, cricket and dance. Inter-house competitions, local tournaments/ events and cluster school matches are popular amongst all pupils at Ashperton. These opportunities enhance skill development and resilience beyond the school curriculum.

The aims of the PE curriculum are to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence and confidence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time.
  • engage in competitive sports and activities.
  • understand how to lead healthy, active lives.
  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
  • use a range of strokes effectively, such as front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke.
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Ultimately, we aim to inspire a lifelong engagement in physical activity by providing an effective, inclusive and progressive PE curriculum. All pupils can develop the knowledge, skills and motivation needed to lead healthy, active lives, supporting their readiness for the next stage of education.
