Ashperton Primary Academy
Ashperton Primary School is a vibrant and forward-thinking village school set in the heart of rural Herefordshire, just five miles from Ledbury in the beautiful village of Ashperton. Surrounded by rolling hills, open countryside and arable farmland, our setting is truly one of our unique strengths. Many of our children come from farming backgrounds, and we take great pride in celebrating the incredible work of our local farming community and helping children understand the importance of the land around them.
At Ashperton, we believe that learning should be inspiring, meaningful and rooted in real life. Our curriculum is carefully shaped by the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, helping children understand their role as future global citizens and the positive difference they can make in the world. From environmental responsibility to social awareness, we encourage every child to think big, care deeply and aim high.
Our wonderful seven-acre field is at the heart of school life. Here, children enjoy our developing wildflower meadow, created in partnership with Herefordshire Meadows and supported by organisations including Buglife, Plantlife and Hidden Herefordshire. This incredible outdoor space supports the conservation of butterflies, bees and other important insects, while also providing a huge outdoor classroom where learning comes alive. Children explore nature through bug hunting, wildlife studies, learning about sheep grazing, meadow conservation and even opportunities for walking a morning mile.
The field also includes our school allotment, where children experience the full journey of food from field to fork. They help grow produce, care for the environment and enjoy seeing their hard work reflected in the delicious school meals they eat. From September, our school dinners will be provided by The Granary, Green Farm, where all food is homemade, locally sourced and much of it comes directly from the farm—perfectly reflecting our commitment to sustainability and supporting local businesses.
Outdoor learning continues to thrive through our successful Forest School programme, our newly planted school woodland, mapped orienteering routes and even kite flying across the field. Our children love beginning the day with a peaceful walk around the meadow before school starts—it is an idyllic way to start learning, giving them freedom, fresh air and space to reflect.
We are also proud owners of some wonderful school animals, including our four much-loved guinea pigs—Cookie, Crumble, Oreo and Biscuit—as well as Bob the leaf insect and our visiting therapy sheep, Noodle. These special animals are an important part of school life and provide children with valuable opportunities to learn about animal care, responsibility and husbandry. Caring for our animals helps children develop empathy, patience and confidence, while also supporting their wellbeing and emotional development. Whether it is feeding the guinea pigs, observing Bob in his habitat or spending time with Noodle, these experiences bring joy, calm and a real sense of connection to nature and the world around them.
Drama and performance are a huge part of life at Ashperton, and every child has the opportunity to take part in a production each year. In Key Stage 1, children begin their performing journey with a traditional Nativity, building confidence and enjoying the excitement of performing for an audience. This continues with our Year 3 and 4 Easter production, before culminating in a full West End-style production in Years 5 and 6. Our older pupils gain so much culturally from experiencing a professional West End musical before creating and performing their own spectacular production. These experiences help children develop confidence, teamwork, creativity and a lifelong love of the arts.
Sport is also central to school life, and children enjoy a wide range of opportunities to be active, competitive and successful. We are incredibly proud of our all-weather play and sports facility and make excellent use of our MUGA (Multi Use Games Area), which has transformed PE lessons, sporting fixtures and playtimes. Children are encouraged to take part in a variety of clubs including tennis coaching, tag rugby, football and hockey, and we regularly hold matches against other schools as well as exciting house competitions.
For children looking for even wider opportunities, we also offer dance sessions and have provided activities such as climbing and orienteering. Some of our pupils have even proudly represented the school in riding and water polo. We believe every child should have the chance to discover a passion and develop confidence through sport and enrichment activities.
We are incredibly proud that our pupils learn in award-winning buildings and benefit from exceptional facilities. Developments include a refurbished playground with exciting new play opportunities and a dedicated all-weather outdoor classroom for our Reception children. Visitors, without exception, are amazed by our facilities and the atmosphere of our school.
Ashperton Primary School currently has 203 children on roll, aged 4 to 11, taught across seven single year-group classes. Our infant classes are Red Class (Reception), Purple Class (Year 1) and Orange Class (Year 2). Our junior classes are Green Class (Year 3), Blue Class (Year 4), Yellow Class (Year 5) and Turquoise Class (Year 6). Each class benefits from a strong, established staff team who are passionate about delivering the very best education and care for every child.
Alongside their class identity, children are also part of a House Team, where they earn house points for excellent work, kindness, politeness and positive behaviour. House teams encourage teamwork, leadership and a strong sense of belonging within our school community.
Our school combines the charm of its 19th-century origins with bright, airy and modern learning spaces. Since being remodelled in 1989 and extended further in recent years, we continue to invest in our environment to ensure children have the best possible learning experience. We are currently planning further teaching spaces and breakout rooms to support interventions, peripatetic music lessons and nurture provision.
Above all, Ashperton is a school built on warmth, ambition and opportunity. We are committed to academic excellence, sporting success, creativity and developing confident, happy children who are ready for the future.
We hope our website conveys the vibrancy of our school and our dedication to providing every child with the very best outcomes. If you feel Ashperton could be the right school for your child, we would be delighted to welcome you for a visit. Come and see our wonderful setting, meet our staff and discover what makes Ashperton such a special place to learn and grow.
