Ashperton Primary Academy Learning for the Future - World Warriors

History

At Ashperton Primary Academy, History is brought to life through rich, exciting and memorable learning experiences that inspire curiosity about the past and a lasting love of the subject. Our History curriculum is carefully designed to follow the National Curriculum for England, giving pupils the knowledge, skills and vocabulary they need to think like historians, ask thoughtful questions and make meaningful connections between the past and the present.

What Makes History Special Here?

We are proud to offer a History curriculum that goes far beyond the classroom. Pupils learn through:

  • Our own Anderson shelter, which provides a unique, hands-on link to life on the home front during the Second World War

  • A striking timeline display across our school, helping children visualise chronology, understand the sequence of events and make links between different historical periods

  • Themed days that immerse children in significant historical periods and events

  • History workshops led by experts, which deepen understanding and spark enthusiasm

  • History-based trips that bring learning to life through real-world experiences

  • Exploration of local history, helping pupils understand the story of their own community and its place in the wider world

These experiences help pupils see History as a fascinating journey of discovery.

Our Aims in History

Our History curriculum aims to help pupils:

  • Develop a secure knowledge of Britain’s past and that of the wider world

  • Understand chronology and how different periods in history connect and change over time

  • Ask perceptive questions and think critically about evidence, sources and interpretations

  • Build a rich historical vocabulary so they can communicate ideas clearly and confidently

  • Recognise how the past has shaped the present, including the lives, communities and societies around them

  • Develop empathy and perspective by exploring the experiences of people from different times and places

Learning That Inspires

Through carefully planned lessons and engaging experiences, pupils are encouraged to investigate, compare, discuss and reflect. They learn how historians use evidence to piece together the past and are supported to become confident, inquisitive learners who enjoy making links across time.

By the time they leave us, our pupils have a strong appreciation of how History helps us understand the world we live in today. They leave with a sense of identity, a respect for the past and an enthusiasm for continuing their historical journey.

Why History Matters Here

We believe History helps children to become thoughtful, informed and reflective citizens. It develops curiosity, deepens cultural understanding and encourages children to value the achievements, struggles and stories of those who came before them.

At Ashperton Primary Academy, History is more than a subject - it is an experience, a story and a journey that every child is invited to enjoy.
