Welcome to Red Class!

Welcome to Red Class, our Early Years class, here at Ashperton.   Mrs Marriage is the Early Years Manager and teaches on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and Mrs Hassan teaches on Friday. Miss Cooper is our fantastic full time teaching assistant.

This year we have 25 amazing children in our class.

Our topics are led by each cohort and we begin the year with the topic, 'Marvellous me!'.

In Red Class....

We love books and reading and read lots of books at school.  This could be in the classroom, at Forest School, outdoors or with our reading buddies.    To begin with, each child in Red Class, will bring home a reading book to share with an adult at home, where they can track the text from left to right, talk about the story and begin to develop a love of reading.  When ready, each child will bring home a graded reading book, which they will start to read at home.   These books come home after the children have learnt to read some phonemes and have begun reading at school.  It is amazing, how many words the children can read!   We also send home 'keyrings' which contain common 'tricky' words, which can be practised at home, alongside the teaching of these in school.

As soon as the children start school, we begin our Supersonic Phonics, synthetic phonics scheme, to teach the children to read and write.  After we have taught a phoneme (sound), the children have a 'phonics booklet' to practise reading and writing that phoneme at home.

Speaking, listening and vocabulary are extremely important to us and we love to spend time exploring new words and their meanings, taking time to chat and have conversations with each other.

In Red Class our intent is to build a deep understanding, confidence and confidence in maths.  We do this through providing lots of engaging activities and many opportunities to develop and extend mathematical skills.  We use NCETM mastering number with White Rose Maths and the children are encouraged to give explanations and reasons for their mathematical answers, furthering their understanding and deepening their leaning.  We send home maths games for children to share with their families and use 'Doodlemaths' to support learning.

Each week we go to Forest School, where we are very lucky to have access to a beautiful local woodland.  We hunt for creatures, climb, create dens, play with our friends, name animals and plants, listen to the birds and share hot chocolate around a fire.  We spend a great deal of time outdoors and love learning in our indoor and outdoor classrooms, on our decking area, in the forest and on one of our fields.

In Red Class, we develop the strength in our arms and hands need to write and use equipment such as scissors through many activities, including 'Squiggle Whilst you Wiggle' and 'Dough Disco'.  When 'squiggling', we move our magic wands to music tracing handwriting patterns and shapes.  During 'Dough disco' we use a pot of clay to make shapes in a fun and active way.

We are very lucky to have a set of balance bikes, which we regularly use outside to develop our balance, coordination and motor skills.  In addition, each week we develop our co-ordination and P.E skills, with lots of fun games and activities.

We have our own online learning journey which children, staff and parents add photographs, work and comments to.  Each week a letter is sent out to parents, ensuring they are aware of the activities and learning taking place in Red Class, so that they are able to support their child.   The children love adding photographs and work to this online learning journey and sharing it with parents at home.

Research shows clearly that preschoolers whose parents have read aloud to them frequently show better language growth, better awareness of phonics and better early reading skills. These advantages enable these children to become successful readers.

Reading is an accrued skill. The more your child reads, the better they get at it and so the more they enjoy it and the more likely they are to read. By reading aloud to your child you provide the incentive for your child to want to start reading on their own.

Each day your child will bring home a reading book to share with you. Please read this book aloud to your child, tracking the text from left to right with your finger and discussing what has been read. Who is their favourite character? What was the best part of the story? Etc.
After a few weeks your child will bring home a graded reading book for them to begin to read to you. As we teach them new ‘sounds’ we will also teach them how to blend these together to read. There will be some words which cannot be ‘sounded out’ and just need to be learnt by sight and there will be times where your child will need more support with their reading.
It is really important that your child reads daily. The best environment to read in is a quiet, calm environment with no back ground noise (such as televisions or radios). Begin by reading the title of the book, pointing to each sound at a time and then blending these together. If your child needs help, you could say the sounds and get them to repeat these, saying them faster and faster, until they blend together to form the word e.g c-a-t, c-a-t, c-a-t, cat.

If your child is tired, you could take turns reading a page each or they could read a sound or two that they can recognise. Take time to talk about the pictures and what they have read. It is important to make the experience enjoyable and fun.

Each day we spend time focussing on an aspect of Mathematics.  We might be solving problems, playing games, hunting for shapes, shopping in our role play area or playing with numbers.  Whatever we are doing will always involve some practical mathematics.

We use a variety of mathematical resources including the Numberblocks, Numberjacks and apps such as DOODLE MATHS to develop our maths.

Seesaw is the fantastic online learning platform we use in Red Class.  Your child will upload content to their own secure space, which can then be viewed at school and by your family at home.  Each child will bring home a unique code to enable you to access their online space.  Seesaw also enables you to comment and contribute to your child's online learning journey- something we really value!

There are two Seesaw apps that we use. Seesaw family, which enables you to view work and connect with he teacher and the Seesaw class app, which is used by your child for learning from home.

Please take a look at the video, which explains the apps in more detail.
